What role do you see technology playing in addressing equity gaps in education?

Technology can be a game changer. During the pandemic, we saw schools that had one-to-one devices and Wi-Fi hotspots were able to continue learning regardless of whether they were in school or at home. Those that didn’t have those resources struggled.

Technology can also help students with disabilities. There are so many tools out there that can help students with various learning needs. For example, text-to-speech software can help students who struggle with reading. Virtual reality can help students with autism better understand social cues. There’s a world of opportunity to leverage technology to meet the unique needs of all students.

As leaders, we have to think about how we’re leveraging technology to make sure every student is able to maximize their potential. It’s not about giving everyone the same thing; it’s about giving everyone what they need to be successful. And technology can help us do that.

What advice do you have for educators and leaders who are facing unprecedented challenges in today’s education landscape?

First and foremost, stay focused on your why. Why did you get into education in the first place? What’s your passion? What’s your calling?

Secondly, make sure you’re taking care of yourself. A burnt-out educator can’t take care of their students. Make sure you’re taking time for yourself, whether it’s exercise, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.

Lastly, stay connected. Reach out to other educators, share your challenges, and ask for help. We’re all in this together, and we can support each other through these difficult times.

Any final thoughts you’d like to share?

Education is the cornerstone of everything. It’s the cornerstone of democracy, of our economy, of our social fabric. We need to make sure we’re giving it the attention it deserves.

As leaders, our job is to make sure every student has the opportunity to be successful regardless of their zip code, their background, or their abilities. We have to make sure we’re creating a system that’s equitable for all students. That’s what drives me every day, and I hope it drives all of us to continue to do this work.
