Women in Kerala are protesting against gender violence. A recent report on the issues faced by women in the Malayalam-language film industry has exposed the deep-rooted problems in one of India’s most popular film hubs. The report, prepared by a three-member panel, paints a grim picture of the industry, highlighting the dominance of a “mafia of powerful men” and rampant sexual harassment of women.
The report, spanning 290 pages, sheds light on the abysmal working conditions on film sets, including the lack of basic facilities like toilets and changing rooms for junior artists, inadequate pay, and a lack of food, water, accommodation, and transport facilities. It also reveals the physical discomfort and health issues faced by women due to the absence of proper facilities, such as not being able to change sanitary napkins during their periods.
The panel, headed by a former judge of the Kerala High Court and established by the state government in 2017, submitted the report to the government in December 2019. However, it was only made public recently after facing delays and legal challenges from members of the film industry.
The report was initiated in response to the horrifying sexual assault on a leading actress in the industry, Bhavana Menon, in 2017. The incident sparked outrage, especially after one of the industry’s biggest actors, Dileep, was implicated in the case. The report also highlights the challenges faced by women in cinema, who are often silenced to protect the industry’s reputation.
The Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) played a crucial role in advocating for action in the case and addressing the broader issues faced by women in the industry. The report, based on interviews with various industry stakeholders, underscores the prevalence of sexual harassment and the fear of reprisal among those who speak out.
The release of the report has sparked calls for accountability and action against those responsible for wrongdoing. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has pledged to take action if any woman who testified before the committee comes forward to file a complaint. The industry, represented by bodies like the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), has denied the accusations of systemic issues and claims that conditions for women have improved in recent years. However, activists and opposition leaders are demanding concrete steps to address the pervasive issues highlighted in the report.
