On June 5th, 40-year-old farmer Ali Ibrahim experienced a nightmare as heavy weapons were heard in the late afternoon. The bombardment lasted for hours, resulting in the destruction of houses and screaming children. At least 100 civilians lost their lives in the attack on Wad al-Nourah, with villagers like Mr Ibrahim being unarmed and defenseless.
Survivors of the attack accuse armed men from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) of opening fire and storming the village, causing death and destruction. The RSF denies targeting civilians, claiming they engaged with elements of the Sudanese Armed Forces.
Residents of Wad al-Nourah endured hours of terror during the bombardment, followed by a second massive attack the next morning, where civilians were killed, looted, and intimidated. The RSF forces prevented survivors from leaving the village and looted their belongings.
The RSF’s actions in Gezira state have sparked accusations of abuses against civilians, in a region heavily impacted by the ongoing conflict.
