A rural region in Spain is offering remote workers $16,000 to relocate and work in a picturesque green valley, located just under three hours from Madrid. This initiative is part of a growing trend of countries incentivizing workers and entrepreneurs to move, with the Regional Government of Extremadura recently announcing its “Live in Ambroz” program, providing grants of about $16,620 to remote workers who commit to living and working in the area for at least two years.

Prithwiraj Choudhury, a professor at Harvard Business School, has been studying innovation, remote work, and the concept of “work from anywhere” for over a decade. He believes that the trend of remote work is changing where people choose to live, shifting the focus away from megacities to more diverse locations where talent can be found.

Digital nomads, individuals with the ability to work remotely and a desire to explore the world, have formed symbiotic relationships with countries worldwide, exchanging consumption for a lower cost of living in beautiful environments. The Ambroz Valley, with its lush green pastures and charming villages, is one such location that hopes to combat depopulation through initiatives like “Live in Ambroz.”

By attracting digital nomads, rural regions like the Ambroz Valley can benefit from increased consumption and connections with the local community. Choudhury believes that these individuals can bring economic and experiential benefits, while also fostering cultural exchange and diverse connections.

For entrepreneurs like Dave Williams, living in countries like Portugal offers the opportunity for geo arbitrage, allowing them to live more affordably while still earning a comparable income. The Ambroz Valley program aims to distribute grants to 200 digital nomads, supporting their relocation with funding for housing and land.

As the number of countries offering visas for remote workers continues to grow, the trend of digital nomadism shows no signs of slowing down. With the potential to revitalize rural areas and create new opportunities for both residents and newcomers, initiatives like “Live in Ambroz” are paving the way for a more flexible and connected workforce. “Chile ha tenido un programa durante más de una década llamado Start-Up Chile”, dijo Choudhury.

“No se anunció como un programa nómada digital porque es mucho más reciente, pero lo que Chile ofrecía y aún ofrece es una visa de un año, sin necesidad de capital de $20,000 para cada uno de estos emprendedores extranjeros”, dijo Choudhury.

Choudhury señaló el programa de Williams en Madeira, Portugal, como una de las historias de éxito.
