Abramović, now 75, says she is “more and more interested in the future”, and how she can use her art to help the world. “I’m very concerned about the planet.”

She describes a new project, The Life, a long-duration performance piece that will last for 1,000 years, starting in 2022. It will take place in the Siberian tundra, with 100 trees planted in the shape of a circle, and a crystal obelisk in the centre. “I want to leave something that is not about me, not about my ego, but it’s about the planet.”

As our time comes to an end, I ask Abramović what she hopes people take away from her work. “I want to touch them, to make them feel, to make them aware of their own potential and their own power, their own greatness, their own ability to change the world.”

We say goodbye, and I close the laptop. The godmother of performance art disappears from my screen, but her words linger, a reminder of the power of art to provoke, to challenge, and to inspire.

That’s the biggest audience I ever had in my life.” She’s currently in talks for a new show, working on a screenplay and planning a new opera. “I still have a lot of things to do.”

But as she continues to expand her practice, she’s also looking to the future of art. “Art is changing, the public is changing, the way we see art is changing.” She talks about how technology is transforming the art world, with virtual reality experiences and digital art becoming more prominent. “But the most important thing is to keep the human touch, to keep the direct human experience.”

And that, ultimately, is what Abramović is all about: the human experience, the connection between artist and audience, the power of art to transform consciousness. As she says, “I want to push the boundaries of what art can be, what it can do, how it can change you.” And with her upcoming exhibition in China, she’s continuing to do just that.
