Zeeshan Ali has been a drag artist for a decade, showcasing his performances all across India. Central to his act are his 45 wigs, which he uses to transform into various characters. Ali, based in Mumbai, believes that the right wig not only helps him embody his stage persona but also boosts his confidence. In the past, sourcing wigs in India was a challenge, leading him to use unconventional materials like wool or fabric. However, the landscape has shifted, with wigs now becoming a popular fashion accessory for all, not just artists like Ali.

Indian hair has always been highly sought after for wig-making, with the country being a major exporter of human hair. Kolachi Venkatesh, a hair collector from Chennai, has been in the industry for two decades. He started as a picker, gathering hair from various sources, including households and salons. Despite the value of this hair in the global market, the pickers earn minimal wages, with intermediaries controlling prices.

While most of the Indian hair is exported to China for wig production, there is a growing need for India to establish itself in the wig-making industry. Businesses like Diva Divine Hair in Delhi are striving to create high-quality extensions and wigs to cater to a diverse customer base. With advancements in technology, wigs have become more comfortable and customizable, appealing to a wider audience.

At the top end of the market is Temple or Remy hair, often sourced from Hindu temples in southern India. Raj Hair International is a major player in this sector, ensuring the hair is meticulously sorted and graded for optimum quality. George Cherion, the CEO, emphasizes the value of Remy hair, which is known for its aligned cuticles and silky texture. The company has developed innovative techniques to minimize wastage and enhance the quality of their products.
