Former governors of Illinois and New Jersey also attempted government cuts, facing challenges and obstacles in the process. The Trump administration has drawn parallels to past government reform initiatives, such as President Bill Clinton’s “Reinventing Government” program.
Daniels’ approach to government cuts included creative measures like putting pennies on state-owned vehicles to monitor their use and selling off excess planes and helicopters. However, he acknowledged the challenges in reducing government spending, especially in the face of resistance from legislators and outside pressures.
Rauner, a Daniels admirer, faced difficulties implementing his Turnaround Agenda in Illinois, clashing with the Democratic-led state legislature. Christie emphasized the importance of transparency in government reinvention, pointing out mistakes like the accidental cancellation of Ebola prevention efforts.
