Vice President Harris is facing increasing signs of dissatisfaction among Arab American and Muslim voters in key battleground states like Michigan and Georgia due to escalating tensions in the Middle East.
A recent poll by the Arab American Institute revealed that former President Trump is leading Harris by 4 points nationally among Arab American and Muslim voters, who are critical of the Biden administration’s approach to conflicts involving Israel, Hezbollah, and Hamas.
In Michigan, where over 200,000 Arab American and Muslim voters reside, Trump and third-party candidates are actively courting this demographic, raising concerns for Harris’s support in the state. Similarly, in Georgia, where more than 150,000 Arab American and Muslim voters are located, there are worries about voter turnout in a state Biden narrowly won in 2020.
Amidst the escalating conflict in Lebanon and Gaza, Jim Zogby from the Arab American Institute highlighted the challenges Harris faces in retaining support from nonwhite, young, and Arab American voters. In Michigan, these voters have historically been crucial to the Democratic coalition, making any shifts in their support significant.
The survey also indicated a decline in Arab American support for Democrats since the recent events in the Middle East, with President Biden’s approval rating dropping to 17% among this community. The National Uncommitted Movement has even launched a campaign urging voters to cast uncommitted ballots in response to the situation.
Despite efforts to engage with Arab and Muslim American voters, Harris is still lagging behind Biden’s support from the community. While she has established an Arab American outreach position in her campaign, some community members question the genuineness of her efforts.
As Trump and Stein capitalize on the dissatisfaction within the Arab American and Muslim communities, Harris continues to work towards regaining their support by emphasizing unity and inclusivity in her campaign. However, challenges remain as decisionmakers within the community demand more direct engagement and concrete actions to address their concerns.
