“College presidents are in a difficult position because they are responsible for their institutions’ financial health and reputation, and they have to balance that with their commitment to academic freedom and diversity,” Young said. “It’s not surprising that many presidents are choosing to remain silent rather than risk the consequences of speaking out.”
Young added that while some critics may see presidential silence as a failure to defend the values of higher education, it’s also important to recognize the pressures and challenges that college leaders face in the current political climate.
“We shouldn’t expect college presidents to be the sole defenders of academic freedom and diversity,” Young said. “It’s up to all of us—faculty, students, staff, alumni, and community members—to stand up for these values and hold our institutions accountable.”
As the Trump administration continues to target federal funding and diversity programs in higher education, the role of college presidents in speaking out against these actions remains a topic of debate. While some leaders have been vocal in their opposition, many others have chosen to remain silent, citing institutional neutrality or concerns about potential repercussions.
